5 Top Companies Switching to Remote and Hybrid Work

BUSINESS TIPS  |  December 23, 2022

The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically changed the way we work. In leveraging the increasing role of technology and to avoid further disruptions in the future, some of the biggest companies have embraced the concept of remote work. Here’s a short list of the top companies that are leading the charge in redefining the workplace.

  1. Microsoft

The tech behemoth based in Seattle was an early adopter of remote work. At the start of the pandemic, Microsoft implemented a mandatory work-from-home policy for all of its employees, save for workers who needed to be on-site.

As health protocols continue to loosen up, Microsoft is now offering its employees the option to show up at the office for certain days of the week, effectively creating a hybrid work environment.  The goal is to give employees the flexibility they need, allowing people to work where they feel most productive and comfortable, according to Executive VP, Kurt Delbene.

  1. CVS Health

One of the first major health companies to shift to the new normal in the workplace is CVS Health. About two years into the pandemic, CVS employees still benefit from flexible working hours and can work remotely for a couple of days per week.

Recently, CVS Health started piloting a new approach to prescription that allows more flexibility for its pharmacists throughout 9,000 US drugstores. About 8,000 staff are checking pill counts, examining prescription information, and other routine tasks remotely. The initiative is currently limited to a few locations, given the varying state requirements for drugstore staffing and working conditions.

  1. Blueshield of California (affiliated with Elevance Health)

Blueshield of California is another top company in the healthcare industry that is embracing elements of hybrid work. Recognizing that there’s no completely turning back to a pre-COVID workplace, Blueshield is allowing its employees to toggle between remote and in-office work depending on the specific needs of their respective teams. On days when workers are on-site, there’s a strong emphasis on social work, such as mentoring, guided training, and brainstorming sessions.

  1. Ford Motors

With over 180,000 employees globally, Ford is allowing about 30,000 workers (composed of managerial, human resources, IT, and accounting) to continue working from home. In addition, Ford is also offering employees the option to opt for a hybrid setup.

According to an announcement in early 2021, Ford is prepared to maintain this new arrangement indefinitely. As restrictions relax further, a gradual return to offices may be possible in the foreseeable future.

  1. Wells Fargo

Even the banking industry wasn’t spared from the effects of the pandemic. Wells Fargo, one of the biggest banks in the US, also shifted to remote work since the onset of the pandemic.

While its two competitors, JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs, have called back workers to the office, Wells Fargo is bucking the trend in one of the oldest industries. According to a recent company announcement, working from home is likely to stay even after the pandemic.

While many of Wells Fargo’s technology, call-center, and corporate operations will gradually go back to the office, the bank is implementing a hybrid setup that allows certain employees to work from home two days a week.
